AUSJET/ADCVA Newsletter
February 2024
Chairperson's Report
Dear Members,
Welcome to the first edition of the 2024 newsletter. I hope everyone had an enjoyable and safe Christmas / New Year break.
Firstly, I would like to acknowledge and thank our members DEN-JET and WOMA for their continued Platinum Sponsorship for 2024 and we look forward to your contributions over the year.
I would also like to take this time to encourage all our members to participate in projects, join sub-committees, give feedback on the organisation, and try to attend as many events as possible over the course of the year.
As we move into 2024 the board is looking forward to another big year for the organisation, culminating in the AUSJET24 Conference & Exhibition being held at the Melbourne Showgrounds in October.
As mentioned in the Christmas edition, the board is motivated to make this conference even more successful than the last. If anyone has any ideas on speakers and conference topics that relate to our industry, please reach out to myself or Gabe to put your ideas forward. There are still spaces open, and if anybody is interested in taking on a sponsorship or exhibitor space, please get in contact with Gary Fitzroy at Expertise Events, he will be more than happy to tailor something to your specific needs.
In 2023 the Safety Forum was established, and this will again be a major focus for 2024. The improved focus of incident reporting and sharing. Far too often we hear about incidents occurring within our members organisations that go unreported, we are also made aware of incidents from non-members. On all occasions we attempt to get information on these incidents out to our members, however as an industry we are failing ourselves in this area. If we continue to not share our incidents and learnings, we will continue to see repeat incidents, this will have a negative impact on how the vacuum, drain cleaning, NDD and high-pressure water jetting industry is viewed.
Please do follow us on social media, sign up to our newsletter, and get involved in our projects. We are making sure that there is the chance for everyone to be a part of this inspiring and welcoming organisation, I urge you to take these opportunities and get involved and make 2024 a record year for member participation.
Our next General Meeting will be held Thursday 14th March 2024 @ 14.00 AEDT, the meeting is scheduled to be held during the Australian Oil and Gas Trade show - AOG Energy in Perth at the Convention & Exhibition Centre, the meeting will also be held via Zoom. To all the members that can attend in person it will be good to catch up and it will also be great to get a large attendance registered on Zoom.

Industrial Services - Cert II, III & IV Course Update
We have recently been in touch with IBSA, and there is a possibility that we will be able to progress these courses in the second half of this year.
IBSA the Jobs and Skills Council for the manufacturing sector, recently invited AUSJET/ADVCA to share the workforce challenges in our industry. They also shared with us the initial plan on manufacturing workforce challenges, developed in late 2023.
To download an excerpt of the Initial Workforce Plan, please click this link: https://bit.ly/49n8isU
AUSJET/ADVCA provided feedback on the initial plan and addressed the following area’s specific to our industry, with a focus on the our industries need and desire to have to provide industry participants with a career pathway and qualification. This is key to our industry to attract and retain people, and has support not only within our membership but throughout the wider industry.
We addressed and communicated the challenges we have
• Attracting a workforce
• Retention
• Lack of diversity in the manufacturing talent pool
• Relevant, future-focused skills deepening and reskilling - the need for broader and more consistent skills development that meets demand for emerging industries throughout careers.
Further to that, IBSA were interested to know what changes we foresee to our workforce because of changes in government regulation, energy costs, technological changes, economic conditions, and other global risks.
In terms of the response to government regulation we did not hold back in our response, and communicated that the introduction of the Jobs and Skills Councils had unnecessarily delayed the development of our industry certificate courses for over two years.
We will continue to work towards the development and implementation of the Cert II, III & IV courses in Industrial Services.
If there are any queries please contact Gabe at support@ausjetinc.com.au

Safety Snippets
Protecting Operators from Hose Failure
High Pressure Hose Failure
High pressure hose failure is a common risk associated with any high pressure water jetting activity. There are some basic measures to minimise this risk.
- Ensure new hoses are tested in accordance with AS4233.2 requirements and that a test certificate is provided.
- Any hoses that have been repaired or re ended need to be retested and a test certificate obtained.
- Complete a visual inspection of the hose prior to using it.
Protecting Operators
An operator should always complete a pre-start inspection of all hoses - check for kinks, flat spots, blisters, damaged threads or broken braids. If any of these are detected the hose should be tagged out and removed from service.
Ensure that all high pressure hose connections are properly secured and that they are restrained with braided hose restraints. The braided hose restraints will prevent the hose from whipping if there is a failure of or near the connection.
AS4233.1
3.2.3 Hose assemblies
(d) All hose connections to equipment or other hoses shall be restrained with appropriate hose restraints, braided stocking or other suitable means to restrict their movement in the event of a hose separation or end failure. Whip checks shall not be used as a hose restraint.
(e) Additionally, the point at which the hose attaches to any hand or foot operated device shall be protected by an over-sheath shroud manufactured from materials capable of withstanding a direct force of the jet of high pressure water to protect the operator in the event of hose separation/or end failure.
When the operator is in close proximity to the hose or a high pressure hose connection - ensure the hose is secured with a braided stocking but also include a rated shroud. Although the connection is secured with the braided stocking the operator can be exposed to a sudden release of high pressure water. The rated shroud will protect the operator from any release of water.
PPE the lease effective means of control.
Ensure all operators are wearing suitably rated personal protective equipment that is rated to protect them from the impact of the high pressure water jet.
Incident Reporting
One of the responsibilities of being a member of AUSJET/ADCVA is to report all incidents. It is important we communicate all incidents within our industry to prevent them from reoccurring and to improve industry safety both here in Australia and now globally through the GICC Global Industrial Cleaning Coalition.
All information is kept strictly confidential and can be reported through our website safety/report-an-incident-/, or directly to our administrator Gabe Wardle support@ausjetinc.com.au. In all cases we request the contact details of the person reporting the incident, so we can work with them to develop an industry safety alert.
When developing the industry safety alerts any reference to the company that had the incident, or the location of the incident is removed. Prior to publishing the safety alert, we send a draft of the alert to the reporting person for their approval prior to distributing the alert to our members and on social media.
What should be reported?
To truly improve industry safety, we would like to see all incidents involving High Pressure Water Jetting, Vacuum Loading, Drain Cleaning and Hydro Excavation reported including:
- Accidents
- Injuries
- Near Misses
- Environmental Incident
In some circumstances we understand that some incidents may be placed under legal privilege. In these instances if possible we would request that members simply advise AUSJET/ADCVA that an incident has occurred without specific detail, then at the completion of the investigation and the period of privilege, we can then work together to develop a safety alert.
To report an Incident, Near Miss, Injury, please go to safety/report-an-incident-/
Incident Alerts
Incident Alert 111 - Hand Injury - Hand caught in vacuum truck valve
During Non-Destructive Digging (NDD) operations, the Vacuum Truck Operator identified a blockage in the suction line. The Operator attempted to remove the blockage by striking the suction hose line with a rubber mallet and operating the system in both ‘vacuum’ and ‘blow’ mode in a further attempt to dislodge the blockage.
Please go to the Safety Alerts page to see futher details of this incident.
Incident Alert 112 - Jetter Fire
A Drain Cleaning Operator returned the HPWJ drain cleaning unit to the Depot, another worker in the yard identified smoke coming out of the rear door, then used a fire extinguisher to put out the small fire.
Please go to the Safety Alerts page to see futher details of this incident.
Incident Alert 113 - HPWJ Drain Cleaning Unit Hose Failure
An operator was cleaning a sewer line using the pendant control on a “Class B” Drain Cleaning unit. The operator was approximately 4m from the hose when it burst. The crew were utilising “Tiger Tails” to protect the hose on entry into the pipe being cleaned.
Please go to the Safety Alerts page to see futher details of this incident.
Asking R U OK? when things get tough
Many communities throughout Australia have been impacted by natural disasters in recent weeks, months and years. The emotional impact can be difficult for people to cope with both in the short and longer term.
Seeing someone you care about struggling can make you feel helpless in the midst of circumstances that are so out of your control. However, one thing you can do is lend support by asking, 'are you OK?' and having regular, meaningful conversations about what they're going through. Listening and showing concern can really help them with their emotions and make them feel supported.
The R U OK? Mateship Manual provides guidance and tips to help you support a family member, friend, neighbour or workmate affected by a natural disaster.
